| Speech Assignments |
t has been found very helpful to speakers to follow a structured development in order to improve their speaking skills. By performing the following six speeches, most of which concentrate on a specific skill development, e.g. use of gesture, use of voice, the speaker should acquire excellent speech writing and performing skills during their time at Chelford Speakers Club.
All these speeches will be evaluated using an evaluation sheet which can be kept for reference purposes. If the evaluator thinks the speaker did not really succeed in the particular assignment, the speaker may choose to have another attempt at a later date. At a Dinner Meeting where there are no individual speech evaluations, the speaker can ask the Education Officer or an experienced Club Member to complete the written evaluation sheet.
When all six speeches have been completed in a satisfactory manner, the Club Member will receive a Certificate of Achievement from the Chelford Club President.
All speeches should last between five and eight minutes, unless they are being given at a Dinner Meeting , when times can be up to a maximum of 15 minutes.
We are a group of people of different ages, sexes and outlooks but with a shared interest in improving our own speaking abilities. We help each other to master the art of effective speaking.During a club night everyone has a role to play, from Chairman for the evening to those participating in the topics session. Ideally, everyone should have the opportunity to stand on their feet and address the audience. Although we can learn much from watching and listening to other people, we can only improve our speaking skills by standing up and doing it.You will find that everything we do is evaluated. We try to have experienced speakers assessing newer members. Speech evaluations are done in a positive way, the evaluators giving a brief analysis of the speech, commenting on the strengths and weaknesses, and making positive suggestions on how a speaker can improve his or her performance. At each session members have a different role to play, as shown on the Club Assignment sheet.Perhaps one of the most important advantages of joining Chelford Speakers Club is that it is very sociable and the evenings are great fun. The Dinner Meetings attract a number of guests and are especially entertaining and less formal than Club Nights.By the end of the first session, your speaking skills will have improved enormously. You will be able to speak confidently on a given subject as well as preparing and delivering and interesting and competent well presented speech. You will also be able to give constructive criticism to your fellow Club Members.

During the year we hold several dinner meetings, usually with a theme, e.g. French Night, Italian Night, and the after dinner speeches and topics reflect the flavour of the particular evening. The speeches tend to be a bit longer on the dinner meetings, e.g. 10 to 15 minutes. There are no speech and topics evaluators on dinner meetings, but the speakers will be evaluated by the General Evaluator.
Guests are particularly welcome at dinner meetings and members of other speakers clubs are invited to attend and participate in the proceedings.
If any speaker at a dinner meeting wishes to have a written assessment of their speech, they can ask the Education Officer or an experienced Club Member, who will be pleased to provide one.
We also endeavour to provide some educational sessions such as speech writing, evaluation techniques, business presentations, debates etc. which we hope all Club Members will find interesting and useful.
During the second half of the year we hold a Topics Contest, open to all members of the Club with the audience doing the judging and picking the best topics of the night. The winner is presented with the Chelford Topics Shield.
The Speech Contest is open to all Chelford Members, and is judged by accomplished speakers from outside the Club. The winner receives the Chelford Speech Contest Silver Cup to keep for a year.
The last meeting of the year is the AGM and the President presents the Susan Hayhurst Crystal Award to the Most Improved Speaker of the Year.
